Like many of you, I watched with anticipation Pope Benedict XVI’s pilgrimage to Ground Zero on television. The solemn ceremony brought back memories of the closing ceremony, so many years ago. I found the Pope’s presence very emotional as he blessed the hallowed ground and offered prayers of support and hope.

As I finalize this letter, Pope Benedict XVI is in New York City speaking to the General Assembly at the United Nations. On Sunday the Pope will visit Ground Zero to pray and bless the site. His historic pilgrimage reinforces the sacredness of the site where so many of our loved ones perished.

This week I visited Syracuse University as part of the schools celebration of our 1st amendment rights that allow ordinary citizens to petition the government. I spoke to students about my firsthand experience working with other 9/11 families as part of a grassroots effort to campaign for the creation of the 9/11 Commission, and legislation based on the Commission's recommendations.

As you know this past Tuesday, February 26th was the 15th anniversary of the first attack on the World Trade Center when six individuals were tragically killed, over 1,000 injured, and thousands escaped the buildings. As I reflect on that day, I have vivid memories of watching in disbelief the news reports of the first attack on the World Trade Center, never realizing that our lives would be intertwined on 9/11.

While our staff is working diligently in our offices to expand the 9/11 Living Memorial digital archive, my husband Frank and I met with 9/11 family members in Raleigh, North Carolina yesterday. It was truly a pleasure to meet families for the first time and hear about the wonderful lives of their loved ones that will be reflected in the 9/11 Living Memorial.

On Wednesday evening I had the pleasure of attending the British Memorial Garden Trust's fifth annual Gala. As many of you know, the Trust, led by visionary Camilla Hellman, is creating a lovely garden in New York City’s Hanover Square Park to commemorate the 67 British lives lost on September 11, 2001.
